Welcome/Willkommen/Bienvenue!

Quick and easy version (1 - 3 minute read)...

Please note; each section starts with a "Quick and easy” 1- 3 minute version, followed by a "More details” 5 -10 minute section.

For 2 reasons;

1; I want this idea to be accessible to children and students, as well as adults.

2; This system can get pretty long and complicated, but you can get a quick overview of the whole thing, by just reading the quick version of each section.

INTRO.

Hello and welcome! My name is Fon Woolridge. I was “Home schooled” and I’m a Musician, Maker and Youtuber - more about me here.

The combi system, is a teaching method, which uses a template to combine a number of different subjects or systems in a new and different way.

It is designed to be much more fun and easy to use than most traditional methods. Incidentally, that template – is simply the picture on the previous/index page!

Let me run an idea by you...Imagine you are about to learn a new skill or subject. And you can see that understanding the basics of this new subject, is not going to be very difficult. Now, imagine if that little bit of knowledge – once learned - would suddenly gave you the basics of (at least) 5 other subjects!

For example, imagine if understanding basic counting, also gave you an understanding of basic music theory...

Sounds too good to be true? Well actually – that's what I believe this system does! Its a missing link...

However, for the system to work, I have had to propose some changes – or at least alternatives – to some of the currently accepted systems...

THE 6 SUBJECTS.

The 6 subjects/phenomena are;

Numbers

Music

Colours

Temperature

Time

Distance

ALTERNATIVES.

See what I did at the start of this page? I welcomed you in 3 languages. They all meant the same thing - but said it in a different way. Learning a new language is similar to what I am trying to do here - a fresh look at old subjects - and suggestions for new and alternative ways to think about - and teach them.

Our knowledge has come to us over many centuries, many people and many countries. In the dark ages, there was no educational overseeing committee! - Things just gradually came into and out of fashion. Example - Miles and inches were once very much in fashion - and then - not so much! Of course, things like Newtons laws of motion - are simply true, and did not undergo any changes. However, I believe that over the centuries - we may have missed some things – and I believe that this system contains some of those- missing links (!)

If you want to hear the story of how the idea first came to me (many years ago)... click here...

I learned a lot over the last few years – from the process of making and remaking this website. It is such an unconventional idea, that I actually dropped it a number of times – but kept coming back to it. Unfortunately, I suspect that some people, may be shocked or at least disapprove of some of the suggestions I make here-that’s OK, each to their own! Once something becomes “traditional” it can take a long time for newer ideas to come through...

OVERVIEW OF SITE.

Numbers. Cavemen, had 10 fingers... The word digits is used for both fingers – and surprise surprise – numbers! Did you know its also possible to count in 12 base?!

Music. We actually need to do the Numbers section before the Music section! That then enables me to make a suggestion for an alternative (IMHO better) version of Music theory(!)  That's a huge claim. But I honestly believe that there is a much easier - and more logical approach to music theory - and I'm not the only one who thinks this (links on page)...

Colours. Colour is part of a thing called the “Electromagnetic spectrum. Even though its a very complex subject – don’t worry -we will only focus on the basics ,

and how they relate to the rest of this site.

Temperature. The template that was used on the previous pages – is easy to use for temperature too.

Time. A surprisingly complex subject. Particularly if you include the history of it - and then look for some - missing links to ...drumroll... distance measuring!

Distance. Another surprisingly complex subject. With a vast history. At the end - I'll make a case for an alternative combined time and distance measuring system (!)

Combinations. A joining together all of the preceding sections!

Recalibration. The metric system has won the battle for supremacy, when it comes to measurement. However, I have a proposal for NIST* and CGPM**. To save the Imperial/US system of measures (Inches feet/miles etc)! Why on earth would I do that?! Well, I believe after a lot of research, that the older systems - including nautical miles - and inches/feet/yards etc where much better than we realise! I also believe they are more closely linked to time keeping systems than metric. However they were just a little bit off - I believe if we recalibrated them slightly - to fit in with the metric system - it could potentially have many advantages...
* National institute of standards and technology (US)
**General conference on weights and measures (France/Europe)

Extras. Here we take a quick look at the interconnectedness of things. Including a look at a famous electrical equation called "Ohms law". Turns out this equation works for many different things – very interesting... Also a brief look at a few other ideas, including things like “Spelling reform” and “Calendar reform”, then finishing with an attempt to see "The big picture". Well I'll try my best anyway!

Conclusions. A discussion of where all that leaves us + next steps?!

With thanks and Legal. To finish.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I am very hopeful that any children or students who get to understand this system, will potentially get a thirst for not only the core 6 subjects, but also some or all of the following; Mathematics, Physics, Geodesy, Metrology, Spectrology, History, Navigation, Horology, etc.

If you are a child or student – or even an adult- If I may, I would like to offer you a little advice...

I believe there are a few important keys to real learning;

The first is to keep you Curiosity alive. We are all naturally curious as children – but then unfortunately, many of us loose it... I’m afraid that imho, some versions of the traditional school systems are probably to blame. However if your curiosity is lost it can be rekindled – and if you have it already – keep it at all costs!

Second, is self belief in your own ability to learn. Nobody understands everything straight away.

3 GREAT QUOTES.

“If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again”. W.E. Hickson or Thomas H. Palmer

“No matter how many mistakes you make, or how slow you progress, you are still way ahead of everyone who isn’t trying”. Tony Robbins

“Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at 20 or 80. Anyone who keeps learning, is still young". Henry Ford.

Many thanks for joining for me! All the best,

Fon Woolridge.
